'The Naked Marx: Review of Herbert Marcuse, Eros and Civilisation' 33k
Having written a critique of C. D. Darlington's biological reductionism, I asked to be allowed to paint on a broader canvas and comment on the spectrum of appeals to biology to support theories of human nature - left, right and centre. I focussed on Herbert Marcuse, whom I greatly admired and continue to do so. He was at the time being pilloried as the theoretician of the German student movement. The review appeared in the New Statesman Vol. 78, 7 November 1969, pp. 666-67.
