'Review of Mrs Klein by Nicholas Wright' 17k
I was very moved by this play, which, like Phyllis Grosskurth's biography (on which it was based) was hated by senior Kleinians who knew her. My analyst broke cover for one of the only two times he ever did and said, 'It's shit, if you want an opinion'. I disagree; I think it shows how much we can manage to endure in the face of ambivalence and destructiveness, especially toward those we love most. It appeared in Free Associations No. 17 (1989), pp. 146-49.
