'The Moral and the Molecular in the Future of Psychiatry' 50k
This is a talk invited for the 200th Anniversary of the founding of the York Retreat, by William Tuke, the place where 'moral treatment' was first introduced into psychiatry. I argue that the concept of disability in physical disability has things to offer to people thinking about 'care in the community'. I also celebrate the writing of Peter Barham and Robert Hayward on the lives and worlds of mental patients. I conclude with some reflections on the concept of the molecular in current psychiatry and social change.
