'The Representations of Primitive Processes in the Cinema'
50kI set out to look at representations of mental illness and psychiatry/psychoanalysis/psychotherapy in movies but soon realised that I was really much more interested in representations of psychotic and primitive processes. The essay looks at various issues around these themes. It was prepapred for the Third International Conference on 'Psychosis: Containing the Inner and Outer Worlds', University of Essex, Colchester, September 1996. A considerably revised version was given in a series on 'Art and Psychoanalysis' at Arnolfini, Bristol, 24 February 1997.
