I gave a version of this paper to the British Society for the Philosophy of Science in 1969, when my understanding of the relationship between scientific explanation and teleology was first formed. I did not prepare it for publication until I was invited to contribute to the fetschrift for John Greene, but I mined it for ideas throughout the intervening period. It was published in J. Moore, ed., History, Humanity and Evolution. Cambridge University Press, 1989, pp 375-401.
