This article began life as a talk to the Guild of Psychotherapists for a conference on the Oedipus complex in 1993. I decided that I was unclear about Kleinian versus other ways of thinking abut it, and this was the outcome. It was published in excellent journal, Melanie Klein and Object Relations 12 (no. 2): 1-20, 1994.
