I was invited to address the University of Winnipeg as a 'Distinguished Visitor' and chose as my topic the problem of dumbing down in the media and the prospects for getting round the gatekeepers of publishing and broadcasting afforded by the internet. I tell the story of my own experiences in various media and with various new technologies since the 1940s, leading to my hopes for the internet.
