1-800 Therapy Network

People who want mental health information or need a referral to a therapist contact 1-800-THERAPIST by phone. The caller speaks with a referral resource counselor who has the knowledge and training to assist the caller in ascertaining the type of specialist needed. The counselor talks with the caller to mutually identify the caller's problem, their geographical area, income, preference for male or female therapist and any other special considerations. These are assessed to ensure the referral is appropriate and will be successful for the therapist and patient. The caller may be offered a referral to more than one therapist, if appropriate. The caller and the therapist then arrange an appointment time and work out an agreeable fee.

Em Edmondson and Nick Totton

Selfheal is a beautiful little purple flower, underfoot everywhere, described by Nicolas Culpepper as "a special remedy for inward and outward wounds". It is also an initiative in therapy and healing, started by Em Edmondson and Nick Totton. The Selfheal style, which we are starting to call embodied-relational therapy , is process centred and incarnation centred, approaching human beings as united bodymindspirit, perfect with a few local difficulties. Our nature seeks to express itself freely, while at the same time protecting itself in conditions often of great difficulty. This double task of expression and protection makes us subject to contradictory pulls, and offering double messages about what we feel, want and need. Through a relationship which is supportive and non-invasive, it is possible to disentangle our doubleness and allow our process to unfold - which is what has been trying to happen all along.

James E. Fischer

I am a psychotherapist trained to help people find solutions to their own problems. Contrary to popular opinion it is a tough field in which to work where often the only reward is the satisfaction that you may have helped someone gain a better outlook on life. I earned my Master of Science Degree in Clinical Psychology from the University of Central Florida in 1988. In 1991, I became licensed in the State of Florida as a Mental Health Counselor. I am also a Certified Clinical Mental Health Counselor through the National Board of Certified Counselors. While I am proficient in a number of psychotherapeutic techniques, I lean toward a cognitive behavioral approach as I believe people are disturbed by their own irrational thoughts and beliefs rather than by events or situations.

Deborah G. Mitnick

I have created a psychotherapy practice that is time-efficient and effective in resolving the negative effects of past traumas. It is unique because the extended sessions that I offer (averaging two to four hours in length) usually relieve the client of the stress provoked by the trauma. For those who suffer from symptoms of depression, anxiety, phobias, panic attacks...For those who have experienced an emotional or physical crisis or trauma...In many instances, just two or three sessions wil completely eliminate these problems. The primary method I use is called Traumatic Incident Reduction (TIR). It is a brief, one-on-one, non-hypnotic, person-centered, and highly structured method for eliminating the negative effects of past traumas.I have worked with clients who have suffered car accidents, serious illnesses, surgeries, anxiety, depression, phobias, robberies, rapes, combat stress, attacks by animals, attempted murders, sexual abuse, and other traumatic events. I havealso successfuly dealt with clients who have continued to grieve and mourn for many years after the death of a loved one. My average contact with clients lasts two-to-five sessions, by which time I expect and generally see a resolution of the presenting problem. I have seen consistently dramatic and postive results from this method. The feedback I receive from my clients indicates that TIR leads to their increased ability to function, elimination of nightmares and flashbacks, enhanced relationships, and a greatersense of empowerment and contentment.
